In contrast (and almost as good), the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus ex Machina is an extroverted, open and insanely perfumed effort that boasts killer blackberry and kirsch-styled fruit to go with layers of spring flowers, exotic spice and graphite. As are all of these efforts, it’s full-bodied, deeply concentrated and textured on the palate, with masses of sweet tannin. It will be better in a couple years and evolve gracefully for two decades, but it’s hard to resist right now. - Jeb Dunnuck

(96-99 points) Not yet bottled but tasted as a final blend, the 2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina, a blend of 60% tank aged Grenache and 40% barrel aged Mourvèdre, is more massive and structured than the La Combe des Fous, showing decadent cassis, blackberry, grilled meat, and touches of chocolate on its brooding, slightly backwards bouquet. Whereas the La Combe des Fous is perfumed and much more finesse driven, this is more in the style of a blockbuster, showing a powerful, full-bodied, rich feel, substantial underlying structure, and a very long, structured finish. This needs 2-3 years of bottle age, and should be incredibly long- lived.

(96 points) Fresh, lifted violets and blueberries with a touch of liquorice on the nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, concentrated juice that is very precisely tailored. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, concentrated juice that is very precisely tailored. Everything is in the right proportion: acidity, fruit, ripe tannin. It's big but not massive, and very well balanced. A consistently strong performer, this will be a really good wine, generous in fruit but structured.

Dense but very velvety with gorgeous ganache and espresso giving way to dark fig hoisin sauce and warm currant confiture. Lots of well-embedded charcoal and tobacco add cut and length to the hefty but driven finish... The grenache comes from Le Crau with the mourvedre sourced from the Bois Dauphin lieu-dit- not far from Beaucastel's vineyards. This cuvée is only made in excellent vintages and clearly shows that 2009 meets that standard. Deeply colored and basically opaque the fruit aromas are precise and focused. The palate is subtle at first but the excitement level ratchets up as the palate showcases more complexity and layers. Not restrained or compact in profile it is the precision of flavors and the exquisite length that sets this wine apart. Incredibly exciting now and will remain so for 15-20 years.
