Wine Spectator, June 2014
Sleek and racy, with a beam of cherry and berry fruit coated in dusty tannins. Comes together on the finish, showing enough sweet fruit for balance. Best from 2016 through 2029.

Sweet tobacco, dried herbs, smoke and spice meld together nicely in the glass. Although a bit compact and forward, the 2009 offers lovely drinking today and should develop nicely for the next decade or so. In 2009, Mastrojanni did not produce their flagship Brunello Schiena d'Asino; that fruit went into this wine.

Dense and suave on the palate, with spicy and peppery nuances to the ripe red cherry, tar and licorice flavors. Finishes long and full, with youthfully chewy tannins. There's a trace of alcoholic warmth attesting to the southeastern Montalcino location of Mastrojanni's vineyards, but this is nonetheless one of the best entry-level Brunellos in some time from this estate. - Ian D'Agata

A clean, fresh red with dried-strawberry and lemon-rind character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a chewy finish. Always excellent. Drink or hold.

Approaching a decade of age, this 2009 Brunello has settled onto a lovely plateau of its evolution. A sophisticated, mature effort this has retained a lively sense of freshness amid the notes of dried cherry, herbs, smoke, leather, and rose petals. The palate shows admirable complexity with a light-on-its-feet style that still retains a degree of depth. Quite food friendly, with very fine, integrated tannins and soft acidity leading the way into the lovely and lengthy finish. Drink now and over the next 3-5 years.
