Medium to full bodied dense and impeccably well-made the brilliant 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Lieu-Dit Pignan which comes from five acres in this sector cropped at 20 hectoliters per hectare is super. Notes of black cherry marmalade plum sauce lavender and licorice jump from the glass of this dark ruby wine. The wine has terrific texture density and a medium to full-bodied rich mouthfeel. It should drink well for at least a decade or more.

Racy spice-accented aromas of redcurrant black raspberry and pomegranate are complemented by fennel and white pepper. Tangy and precise on the palate offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a note of bitter orange. Finishes brisk spicy with very good persistence. -Josh Raynolds

On the nose a delicious potpourri of raspberry blackberry lavender violet and Morello cherry liquor with nuances of baking spices and an underlying note of shaded earth. The spice notes lift the warm fruit flavors on the palate. Touches of citrus also add to this beguilingly refreshing CdP while the acidity from the sand-based north-facing terroir adds even more lift. A lovely delicate nuanced espression of Grenache in its most noble terrain.

Only 200 cases of this cuvée were made fermented in concrete and aged in larger demi-muids. Opaque color. Although the bouquet is subtle and restrained the fruit aromas are pure and balanced with great acidity providing lift and finesse on the finish. Pure and focused this is a very pretty wine showing just a hint of sweetness to the fruit but no overripeness or thick viscosity. With this polish it is obvious this has been made with a deft hand. Although quite approachable now this could benefit from a few years to let the wine open up and will peak by the end of the decade.
