(NM92-94 points) The Fonteny has wonderful definition on the nose, the mineralite really showing through with a touch of nettle and wild heather. Complex and absorbing. The palate is very well balanced with fine, ripe tannins, juicy redcurrant and raspberry with a fine, filigree finish. This Fonteny is imbued with such panache and class that it is nigh impossible to resist.

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys is layered with dark cherries, flowers, spices and menthol. This is an especially fleshy, textured Gevrey. The showy personality of the vintage comes through, but there is also plenty of underlying structure and vibrancy. I especially like the intensity of the finish. Here the nose is not quite as ripe though it is airier and more refined with a pretty mix of very fresh red berry fruit that is cut with hints of earth and humus that continue onto the precise and pure flavors that possess a firm minerality that continues onto the energetic balanced and impressively long finish. As is typically the case this is an elegant Gevrey 1er that isn't quite as complex as the Corbeaux but is every bit as long. A choice. Outstanding.
