A spectacular showing, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape was firing on all cylinders at this tasting. As sexy and seamless as they come, with blackberry liqueur, kirsch, creamy licorice, orange peel and dried flower-like aromas and flavors, it hits the palate with a full-bodied, up-front, decadent style that just begs to be drunk. Drink this puppy while you wait on the 2010. - Jeb Dunnuck

A fantastic base cuvee the 2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 75% tank aged Grenache 15% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre Cinsault and Vaccarese. It displays a meaty perfumed and spice-laced bouquet of red fruits licorice and mineral medium to full body a superb silky texture admirable balance and plenty of length on the finish. While not as deep or rich as the Vieilles Vignes it has solid concentration and a very drinkable delicious style. Consume bottles over the coming decade or so.

Dense and creamy but fresh bolstered by very good energy to the blackberry mulberry and cracked pepper flavors. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and excellent spicy persistence. -JR

The syrah is aged in 1-year-old barriques while the grenache sees concrete. Darkly colored the fairly closed bouquet reveals scents of green herbs and spice. There are gobs of richly textured fruit here that are concentrated and beautifully flavored. The bouquet and palate have achieved a perfect sense of ripeness without going over the top and minerality forms the foundation of the finish which has an innate sweetness and compelling round textures.
