The 2009 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Auguste Favier is a gorgeous effort in the vintage. A blend of 80% Grenache 15% Cinsault and 5% Mourvèdre that's aged in a combination of concrete and 3-year-old barrels it displays brilliantly perfumed complex aromas of kirsch liqueur garrigue licorice rolled stone and meat juice on the nose. This leads to a full-bodied hedonistically styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape that possesses a seamless elegant texture loads of sweet fruit and ultra-fine tannin on the finish. This doesn't have the depth or richness of the '07 but is stunning nonetheless. It should drink beautifully for 10-12 years.

Very rich and caressing with lovely plum sauce melted licorice and cassis aromas and flavors all woven together and backed by ample but velvety tannins. The long tar-stained finish shows well-integrated grip while the fruit echoes. Best from 2012 through 2023. 1583 cases made.

Intensely perfumed scents of red berry preserves potpourri Asian spices and white pepper. Potent raspberry and cherry flavors are given cut by tangy acidity and pick up a deeper cherry pit quality with aeration. Impressively pure accented by intense finishing spiciness and persistent floral character. This is already very alluring.

The only other 2009 I was able to taste on this visit, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier doesn’t disappoint and gives up plenty of kirsch liqueur, white pepper, herbes de Provence and licorice to go with a full-bodied, sweetly-fruited, yet concentrated profile on the palate. Showing additional tannic grip on the finish, it will continue to evolve nicely through 2024. - Jeb Dunnuck

Subtle scents of strawberry and cherry come across as light and ethereal. Once again the palate is surprisingly richer and more complex than the bouquet indicates. Balanced and refined hints of caramel and burnt sugar mingle with cherry that fades softly bolstered by the finest of tannins. Best to drink before the end of the decade though it could surprise and go longer.
