Decanter,

Translusent, shimmering gold indicates a wine of poised ripeness; beautiful scents of orange blossom merge with sense of great chalky terroir. The purity and sublime texture of the mouthfeel owes a lot to non-malolactic...

jebdunnuck.com, February 2018

The 2009 Cristal is a beauty, with incredible richness as well as elegance, which are the hallmarks of this cuvée. Always a rough blend of 60/40 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from estate vineyards, it has a toasty, yet pure...

Vinous, December 2023

The 2009 Cristal is a wine of pure and total sensuality. There are no hard edges or angular contours. Instead, the solar energy of the year is front and center. Even with all that intensity, the 2009 is impeccably...

(97 points) The latest incarnation of this famous Champagne now comes from Roderer's own vineyards, a good portion of which are run on biodynamic lines. This still-young wine has great depth and richness, a beautiful...

View From The Cellar, March 2018

The 2009 vintage of Cristal is composed of a blend of sixty percent pinot noir and forty percent chardonnay, with none of the vins clairs this year undergoing malolactic fermentation. Sixteen percent of the base wines...

Wine & Spirits, December 2017

This opulent vintage of Cristal has the ethereal earthiness of sun on limestone. Its chalky minerality is polished to a spherical shape, holding the wine’s ripe notes of fresh peach and hints of meadow flowers. The...

95+ The 2009 Cristal is a blend of Grands Crus from the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs (a total of 33-34 parcels of which 40% were farmed biodynamically). Like the 2008 Cristal, the...

(95 points) White peach and acacia blossom aromas accent the flavors of poached apple, gingersnap biscuit, pastry cream and spun honey in this harmonious Champagne. The satiny mousse caresses the palate, while firm...

In 1845, at a time when majority of winemakers were buying the grapes rather than cultivating their own, Louis Roederer took a visionary approach. Wanting to master every aspect of the wine’s creation, he acquired several Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay. Since then, every Louis Roederer vintage originates exclusively from their own vines. Its tete-de-cuvee, Louis Roederer Cristal, is among the finest Champagnes in the world.

The estate, which originally comprised 100 hectares acquired in 1850, now extends over 240 hectares, carefully chosen from the best terroirs of the Montagne de Reims, the Cote des Blancs, and the Vallee de la Marne. The estate cultivates 3 traditional grape varieties: Chardonnay for its minerality, finesse, and elegance; Pinot Noir’s solid constitution which adds structure to the blends and prepares the wine for aging; and Pinot Meunier whose adaptability brings harmony and softness to certain cuvees.

The Louis Roederer House has remained an independent, family-owned company and is now managed by Frederic Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation of the lineage.

Roederer’s most famous wine was created in 1876 to satisfy the demanding tastes of Tsar Alexander II. Particularly fond of the House’s wine, the emperor asked Louis Roederer to reserve the best cuvee for him every year. To distinguish this cuvee, this exceptional champagne came in a flat-bottomed, transparent lead-crystal bottle. The new brand was named after this precious material, which is particularly transparent and luminous.

Produced only during the best vintage years, when the Chardonnay (around 40%) and Pinot Noir (around 60%) grapes have attained perfect maturity, Cristal is aged for 6 years in Louis Roederer’s cellars and left for a further 8 months after degorgement.

Cristal is a remarkably balanced and refined champagne whose length is inimitable. It has a silky texture and fruity aromas, complemented by a powerful mineral quality with white fruit and citrus notes. Cristal is a wine that keeps well: it can be aged for over twenty years without losing its freshness and character.

The 2009 Louis Roederer Cristal is a truly exceptional Champagne that showcases the best of the vintage and the renowned craftsmanship of the Louis Roederer house. With its supple and lovely character, this Champagne is a testament to the richness and precision of fruit that can only be achieved from the chalk terroirs of Champagne.

This Champagne is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, sourced from seven grand cru villages in the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs regions. The vineyards are meticulously farmed, with 40% of the parcels being cultivated biodynamically. The wine is aged for six years in the cellars, allowing it to develop complexity and depth.

On the nose, the 2009 Cristal exudes elegance and purity. Scents of orange blossom and chalky terroir merge together, creating a captivating aroma. The palate is equally impressive, with a sublime texture that is the result of non-malolactic winemaking. This technique helps maintain freshness and showcases the true fruit flavors of the Champagne. The mouthfeel is round and rich, with a lingering finish that is both complex and delicate.

Wine critics have been enraptured by the 2009 Louis Roederer Cristal. Wine & Spirits awarded it a score of 96, praising its clarity, purity, and resonance. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a score of 95, noting its stunning purity, freshness, and lingering salinity.
