Fattoria Le Pupille’s 2009 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente takes a little while to fully appreciate. As you first approach the glass, you are hit by a massive wave of black truffle and forest floor. The wine is dominated by a wild and rustic personality that so faithfully mirrors the territory that shaped it. After a few minutes those truffle aromas start to lift, revealing small berry nuances and delicate dustings of exotic spice. Worth noting also is the acidic freshness on display. I came back to this wine 30 minutes and one hour later. Each time, it had gained in elegance and finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. - Monica Larner

James Suckling - jamessuckling.com, October 2014
Rich, layered red with blueberry and chocolate character, plus hints of vanilla. Full body with round, velvety tannins. A moreish wine. Drink or hold.

Sweet, plush and pliant, with bright, candied red berry and floral flavors complicated by spices and eart. The long finish features silky-smooth tannins. Outstanding wine: in almost every vintage Poggio Valente is the best Morellino Riserva made.

Le Pupille

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
