jebdunnuck.com, November 2019

I’ve been lucky to have drunk close to a case of the 2009 Côte Rôtie La Landonne, and if there’s a more perfect Syrah out there, I don’t know of it. Revealing a vivid ruby/purple color, it delivers a spectacular bouquet...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2018

One sniff, swirl and sip and I was convinced this is a candidate for the best vintage of Guigal La Landonne ever produced! And that is really saying when you consider how many stunning wines have been produced since 1978!...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, September 2015

Much more upfront and easy to read than the backward 2010, the 2009 Cote Rotie la Landonne is an insanely beautiful wine. Smoked meats, game, black olives, charcoal, black raspberries and pepper all literally soar from...

Wine Spectator, October 2013

This delivers a stunningly ripe, pure, polished bolt of plum confiture, along with notes of anise, mocha, blueberry coulis, Black Forest cake and espresso. The finish sports admirable grip for this ripe-styled vintage...

Vinous, March 2014

Glass-staining purple. Explosive aromas of dark berries, fresh violet and anise, with a hint of smokiness in the background. Sappy and incisive on the palate, offering deeply pitched, spice-tinged cassis and bitter cherry...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, October 2010

(18++/20) More severe than Turque. A bit green and tight for the moment, very different from the rest - it doesn't really care whether you like it or not. Slightly inky at the moment, dry finish. Slightly tarry. All the...

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Cote-Rotie appellation. It shelters a unique vineyard where the vines and the wines have been famous for 2,400 years. Arriving in the region in 1924 at the age of 14, Etienne began his career at Vidal-Fleury, participating in its development and working his way up to the position of cellar-master before leaving to establish his own company. He has vinified 67 harvests in Cote-Rotie.

In 1961, although still very young, Marcel Guigal took over management of the establishment from his father who was stricken suddenly with total blindness. In 1973, his wife Bernadette joined him and they worked together to develop the family business. In 1975, their son Philippe was born and is today the estate’s winemaker. With his wife Eve, he represents the third generation to continue the family business, in the service of the great wines of the Rhone Valley.

Their hard work and perseverance enabled them to purchase the Vidal-Fleury Establishment in the mid ‘80s and in 1995, they acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, an ancient fort built in the 12th century, later repurposed into a Renaissance chateau during the 16th century. In a state of neglect and terrible disrepair, Guigal has taken on a colossal renovation, spanning nearly 11 years with over 100 people working on the project.

The Chateau d’Ampuis has become the headquarters of the Guigal Estate while the offices and the cellars remain in the ancient small village of Ampuis. While their vineyards span the length and breadth of what the Rhone Valley offers, the heart of the winery’s production is still Cote-Rotie, whose ultimate expression can be found in Guigal’s most famous releases: La Landonne, La Turque, and La Mouline.

The 2009 Guigal Cote Rotie la Landonne is a truly exceptional wine that showcases the best of the Northern Rhone region in France. With a deep, dark red color that is almost opaque, this wine is a visual delight in the glass. The intensity and richness of the color hint at the luxurious experience to come.

On the nose, the aromas are incredibly complex and alluring. Notes of smoked meats, game, black olives, charcoal, black raspberries, and pepper intertwine to create a captivating bouquet. The aromas are intense and expressive, soaring from the glass and enticing the senses.

Upon tasting, the wine reveals a massively concentrated and decadent profile. The flavors of plum confiture, anise, mocha, blueberry coulis, Black Forest cake, and espresso dance on the palate, delivering a symphony of flavors. The wine is ripe, pure, and polished, with admirable grip and a grounding rod of iron buried deeply in the finish. There is both fruit and muscle present, and the minerality adds a layer of complexity that will continue to evolve with cellaring.

The 2009 Guigal Cote Rotie la Landonne is a wine that demands attention and respect. It has received high praise from esteemed wine critics, with scores of 100 points from Jeb Dunnuck and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and 99 points from Wine Spectator. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now, with a few hours of decanting, but also has the potential to age gracefully for decades to come.

This wine is a masterpiece from Guigal, a producer known for their commitment to quality and excellence. With its impeccable balance, stunning concentration, and remarkable longevity, the 2009 Guigal Cote Rotie la Landonne is truly one of the greatest Syrahs ever produced. It is a wine that will leave you speechless and is a must-have for any serious collector or wine enthusiast.
