Although this is very ripe and rich with a generous body and a slew of black fruit aromas it’s also elegant and poised. The bitter chocolate character is more restrained than in many modern-style Right Bank wines of this...

Very dark with strong pastis-soaked blackberry and roasted plum notes leading the way with layers of sweet spice mocha and tobacco filling in on the finish. Rather lush and perhaps a touch too roasted in style for some...

Bordeaux’s Chateau Troplong-Mondot is a large wine estate on the Right Bank of the Gironde River overlooking the village of Saint Emilion. Its 33-hectare vineyard is planted traditionally with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The chateau dates back to 1745 and Troplong-Mondot was originally part of one sizeable domaine which included the vineyards of Chateau Pavie. The current estate was established in 1850 when Raymond-Theodore Troplong acquired Mondot, expanded the vineyard, and promoted its reputation. Following a trend of that period, his heir Edouard Troplong later added Mondot to his name and Troplong-Mondot was born.

The property passed into the hands of the Valette family at the beginning of the 20th century, with Christine Valette taking up management of the property in 1980. Since then, things quickly changed for the better. The quality of the wines improved and Chateau Troplong-Mondot became known as one of the top wines of the Right Bank.

Christine Valette has since passed away and today, the estate is managed by Xavier Pariente who has been involved with the estate since 2002. In 2006, it was awarded the Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the Saint Emilion classification.

Chateau Troplong-Mondot is grown on extensive vineyards rich in limestone and clay soils. Powerful and well-structured with pronounced complex tannins, its deep aromas of truffles and blackberries develop over time.

The grapes are hand-harvested, totally destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, moving to oak barrels for secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine is matured in oak barrels (75% new oak and 25% one-year old) for 12 to 24 months depending on the vintage. The average production of the grand vin is between 60,000 to 90,000 bottles.

The 2009 Troplong-Mondot is a Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Saint Emilion region of Bordeaux, France. This exceptional red wine showcases the expertise of the Troplong-Mondot winery, delivering a truly remarkable drinking experience.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep garnet color that immediately catches the eye. The aromas that waft from the glass are nothing short of captivating. Plum preserves, spice cake, mincemeat, and potpourri scents fill the air, accompanied by hints of exotic spices, incense, and a subtle balsamic note. This complex bouquet is a testament to the wine's meticulous craftsmanship.

On the palate, the 2009 Troplong-Mondot showcases its full-bodied and super-rich character. The fruit is hedonic, possessing a luscious and concentrated quality that coats the mouth with layers of spicy goodness. The texture is plush and velvety, providing a luxurious sensation with every sip. The wine culminates in a long and decadent finish that leaves a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critic Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine a remarkable score of 96 points. She describes it as an extravagant beauty, perfect for those who appreciate wines with depth and intensity. The wine has also received high praise from other esteemed critics, further solidifying its status as an exceptional Bordeaux offering.

With an alcohol percentage of 15.5%, the 2009 Troplong-Mondot has been a source of controversy. However, critics like Chuck Hayward emphasize that this wine is not a flabby fruit bomb. It showcases its specific terroir, highlighting a taut linear profile and a distinct graphite mineral component unique to Chateau Troplong-Mondot.

This wine has the potential to age gracefully for the next 30 years, allowing its flavors to evolve and mature over time. It is truly a wine lover's dream, offering power, elegance, and a harmonious balance of ripe berry fruits, chocolate, and wood flavors. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, the 2009 Troplong-Mondot is a wine that deserves a place in any discerning collector's cellar.
