Its acidity cuts through the full pear and apricot flavors to give a tight crispness. At this stage, it is all fruit and acidity, but it does have the potential for greatness with a more complex sense coming from the wood aging and the fine, tight texture.

Intense pungent floral-accented aromas of pear skin stone fruits and rosemary are complicated by vanilla smoke and dusty minerals. Explosive on entry then sweet and dense in the middle palate with tropical fruit and fresh herb flavors nicely lifted and extended by lively acidity. Finishes with a repeating smoky mineral character excellent length and complexity and attractive restraint. A lovely understated white wine in the making.

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2010 is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Semillon picked from 2nd September. At the Château it has a rather understated almost earthy nose at first with dried white flowers and a mote of chalk dust but at the UGC it is much more vivacious with a silver thread of citrus peel. The palate is well-balanced on the entry fine citrus lemon grapefruit and just a hint of spice good weight and quite linear towards the finish but great persistency. Very fine but showing much better under the sunshine.

This crackles with thyme and savory notes, offsetting the powerful core of lemon curd, white peach and fennel. The long, pure finish has a stony thread and extra waves of fruit and herb. Drink now through 2019. – JM

The nose displays a waxy grassy note mixed with exotic tropical fruit and an underlying smoky note. On the palate this has a creamy rich mouthfeel with a leesy nutty character and notes of lemon crème and citrus peel that carried by acidity to a long vibrant finish. This larger scaled white should show well in its youth but has the weight and tension to create a long-lasting classic Bordeaux white. Enjoy over the next 15 years.
