There is not a trace of new oak despite the fact that it is from 100% new barrels at Clos Saint-Julien. Mineral-dominated this dense purple wine has precision and remarkable freshness for a wine that is so big rich and concentrated. Once the Cabernet Franc starts to show nuances probably not for at least another 4 or 5 years this could be one of the shockingly great wines of the vintage. Sadly though there is so little of it most people will never have the chance to taste it. This is exciting and should last 25-30 years.

This tiny production from superstar Stephane Derenoncourt comes from a 1.2 hectare vineyard planted to 80-year-old cab franc vines and 40-year-old merlot. The nose showcases high-toned plum cassis currant and smoked herbs. Long and fresh with medium-bodied tannins the palate displays grilled meat and balanced acidity leading to a long elegant finish. Ready 2015-2020.
