jamessuckling.com, February 2013

This a Petrus with extraordinary balance and depth. It shows such elegance in the nose with complexity of black olives, dark fruits, and flowers. The palate is full and ultra-velvety yet there is a cashmere quality to the...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2013

At close to 14% alcohol, (which is high for Petrus) the wine offers intense aromas of chocolate, truffle, minerality, earth, blackberry essence, plum liqueur, blueberry, flowers and black cherry liqueur with kirsch...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2020

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Petrus opens a little broody, with gentle crushed rocks, cast iron pan and fragrant earth notions giving way to a core plum preserves, baked blueberries, licorice and Black Forest cake plus...

Decanter, January 2020

Maybe surprising to see a Pomerol that is so well-built that it is not anywhere near ready even at 10 years old, but this is Pétrus, a place that writes its own rules. The brushed silk exuberance is there, but hidden...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, March 2011

Tasted at the chateau leaving the sample to open over five minutes the nose unfurls enticingly in the glass. The bouquet displays extraordinary concentration with dark berries boysenberry crushed stone and a touch of...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2011

Hugely full-bodied wine with the ripest fruit black plum juice and spice. The tannins are very dense balanced of course with acidity. The end is beautiful structured.

Wine Spectator, March 2013

This feels dense and unyielding now, with loads of grip supporting a dark, muscular and very backward core of bay leaf, tobacco, plum, blackberry and fig notes. Powerful, fresh and racy, with a tarry edge adding vivacity...

Little known 50 years ago, Petrus has become mythical for the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors. Among them is an exceptional terroir—located 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation—with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil.

These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape and the iron-rich clay is relatively unique within the region. As a result, the 28 acre vineyard is planted only to Merlot. Average vine age is more than 50 years, and are allowed to reach 70 years before replanting.

The approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful of the special terroir. The viticulture is fastidious—severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer—and allows perfect ripening of the fruit. Grapes are manually harvested over just two days and sorted before crush.

Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased half a share of Petrus in the early 1960s and are largely credited with its rise to fame. The company also owns many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.
