James Suckling - jamessuckling.com, February 2013
The blueberries, walnut and chocolate character here is impressive. Full and very silky with refined tannins and a silky finish. Very pretty. Wonderful balance like the 2009. Try in 2016.

Offers a plush feel, with warm cocoa and steeped blueberry notes leading the way, backed by dark, fleshy plum and blackberry fruit. A loamy edge takes over on the finish, revealing a flicker of tobacco in the background... The wine is less complex than a Chevalier, but displays plenty of raspberries, red currants and sweet cherries as well as hints of vanilla, smoke and Christmas fruitcake. The blend is 45% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol. Always elegant, stylish and medium-bodied, it should drink best between 2015 and 2030.

The Carmes Haut-Brion 2010 has a straight down the line, well defined Graves bouquet that is very elegant: blackberry, raspberry and briary fruit. The oak is perfectly disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good depth and fine acidity. It just comes across as a little forceful towards the finish, whilst there is a touch of bitterness on the aftertaste that this wine has to address.

Bright red-ruby. Aromas of cherry, spiced plum, smoke and earth, plus a whiff of sweet butter. Aromas of cherry, spiced plum, smoke and earth, plus a whiff of sweet butter. Juicy and a bit tight, showing moderate flesh and depth but good complexity to its flavors of red fruits, spices and minerals. There's a good dollop of cabernet franc in this wine, and it shows in the youthfully imploded texture. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lingering minerality.

Aged for 18 months in half-new oak barrels. From a mere 5 hectares of 35 year old vines in the more urban area of the outskirts of Bordeaux near Chateau Haut-Brion this is an estate on the rise with new owners who are beginning to invest in lifting this estate. It is very shiny and floral on the nose with ripe aromas of dark fruits spice and vanilla. Very plush on the palate this is a bit singular but still manages to be full of fresh fruit and long length. This is an unbeatable wine for short-term drinking as the tannins are already integrated and only expand mildly on the finish. Only 2000 cases made. Stephane Derenoncourt consults. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2010 Les Carmes Haut Brion is brooding and powerful. This “stones throw” neighbor to 1st Growth Haut Brion offers up fresh red and black fruit, followed by rich spices and truffle as well as rich turned-earth tones. This is full-bodied and has rich tannins that hold firm, but it offers good balance with fresh acidity, too. The mid-palate shows amazing texture and flavor and hints at the potential for what this should become with time. This still requires another 5-7 years before truly revealing its secrets. Drink from 2020-2050 with ease.
