It is quite evident the 2010 has already begun a move into a closed phase, as it is quite shut down in its aromatics. At the same time, the structural profile suggests it will enjoy a long drinking window starting around age 10-12, although that may be optimistic. Energetic, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass - with plenty of translucent energy - the 2010 Il Poggio is a wine to buy and forget about for another decade or so. collapse

This needs air and opens like a beautiful rose with plum, mineral and berry character. Full body, round tannins and a fruity and clean finish. Very savory and subtly fruity. Drink now.

The wine is splendent in this classic vintage with clear pulses of forest fruit, spice, toasted almond, balsam herb, cola and dark licorice. Those balsam notes are one of the wine's most elegant features because they are delivered at perfect pitch. Silky tannins and bright acidity keep the wine very much alive in the mouth. Castello di Monsanto offers us a very authentic Chianti Classico. - Monica Larner collapse

Aromas and flavors of eucalyptus, wild sage, juniper, currant and cherry mark this supple red. Complex, with a solid, tannic structure underneath and a fruity, woodsy aftertaste. Drink now through 2024. 2,000 cases made. –BS

Castello di Monsanto

Castello di Monsanto is a family owned and operated wine estate located in Chianti, Tuscany. Fabrizio Bianchi founded the winery in 1962 and produced the first 6,000 bottles of the Chianti Classico Cru, Il Poggio. He pioneered the use of only 3 grapes (Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino), eliminating white grapes (Malvasia and Trebbiano) from the Chianti Classico blend.

The 72-hectare vineyards are located between 260 and 310 meters above sea level. Out of these 72, 56 hectares are planted with Sangiovese found in the Il Poggio vineyard and a small percentage of Canaiolo and Colorino. The Valdigallo vineyard produces Chardonnay and the Il Mulino vineyard is the ideal place for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Castello di Monsanto has a unique cellar which is worth a visit. The three-hundred-meter tunnel links the new cellars to the castle’s 18th-century ones and was built by hand-split marl stones using ancient Medieval techniques.
