Mocha chocolate plums sweet spices and black cherries jump from the glass in this full-bodied intense wine. This is one of the more immediate wines of the vintage but all the elements are very nicely balanced. Once again Caymus has produced a gorgeous Special Selection that is delicious on its own but that is also remarkable for a relatively large production of 9600 cases that will make it easy to find. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. -Antonio Galloni

The nose is coated with fine French vanilla and follows through with juicy dark red cherry ripe plum and a hint of baking spice. The palate is incredibly warm and rich with mouthwatering blackberry pure cherry coulis and crème de cassis supported by smooth tannins and a lingering finish. Although dense and brooding there is an overall sense of refinement and class to this bottling as it is already firing on all cylinders right now. Regardless it will be a long-lived vintage that will prove rewarding over the next fifteen years or more. A must-have for any fan of Caymus Special Selection.

Label

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection is the flagship wine of the Wagner family, produced under the guidance of Chuck Wagner. Made from the very best barrels of the vintage, the wine is not produced in difficult vintages.

Its distinctive aromas and flavors are achieved through “hang time” – leaving the fruit to hang on the vine unusually long to develop suppleness, increase color, and mature the tannins of the grapes.

Winery

Caymus

Chuck Wagner has spent his life in the vineyards of Rutherford, near the center of Napa Valley, steering his family’s business from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Chuck was just 19 when he joined his parents in 1972 to create Caymus Vineyards, taking them up on their proposal to sell the home wines they had been making from grapes they grew on their property.

He and his father, Charlie, worked long days side by side, managing every part of the business. Both father and son believed in making wines with character, complexity and consistency. They embraced Napa’s unique climate and soil, helping to establish the region’s singular style and reputation for cabernet sauvignon. One of the family’s most exciting moments came in 1989, when Wine Spectator awarded them “Wine of the Year” for their 1984 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Five years later, the magazine conferred the award again for their 1990 vintage, the only wine in the world to receive this honor twice.

Caymus is now part of the Wagner Family of Wine, which includes chardonnay, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc and merlot made by Charlie, Joey and Jenny, three of Chuck’s four children.
