Weinbach’s 2010 Gewurztraminer Mambourg Vendange Tardive is dramatically different in aromas from its 2009 counterpart, seemingly reflecting a cool vintage in its concentration of cooling mint and oregano, jasmine and chamomile, grapefruit and pineapple, along with celery seed and smoked meat. From the nose, you would never guess that this was a V.T. of obvious sweetness. A striking suggestion of red raspberry preserves wells-up en route to the long finish, accompanied by candied grapefruit rind, smoky black tea, herbal essences, as well as strongly herbal and floral honey. At once soothingly mouth-coating, interactive and vibrantly complex, this sensational bottling transcends its cepage not to mention its sweetness. - David Schildknecht
