Wow. Great aromas of plums, cedar, chocolate and spices. Tar too. Full body, soft and round tannins and a long, long finish. Exceptional. Best wine ever from Oberto? Better in 2018.

From one of the most consistent (and celebrated) vineyard crus in the appellation, the 2010 Barolo Brunate flaunts a dry, slightly exotic quality with aromas of wet earth, button mushroom, tobacco, cured meat and Asian spice. Its appearance is bold and concentrated and the mouthfeel is similarly plush and velvety. The Brunate cru offers exceptionally structured Nebbiolo expression and this wine does a great job of underlining that fact. Drink: 2017-2028. - Monica Larner

La Morra. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Amazingly spicy, minerally and savoury on the nose. Sweet full spread on the palate. Certainly intense but with impeccable balance. 17/20 (WS)
