A mildly toasty nose of red and black raspberry wet stone and a touch of forest floor slides gracefully into rich powerful and impressively well-concentrated middle weight plus flavors that evidence an intense minerality on the explosively long firm tension-filled and exceptionally serious finish. This is a relatively big wine even by the typical standards of Clos des Chênes which is well-known for creating the biggest wines in Volnay. This is most impressive but not just for its striking size and weight but also for its grace and impeccable balance.

Larger-scaled than the Clos de la Barre with flavors of medicinal black cherry licorice and wild mint. More tannic too even a bit dusty and tough but finishes with sneaky persistence. This should evolve slowly and last well.
