A wine that could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, the 2010 Rauzan-Ségla is an incredibly powerful, full-bodied wine by this estate’s standards, yet it nevertheless holds onto a terrific sense of elegance as well as perfect balance. A huge nose of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and spice give way to a concentrated, blockbuster styled Margaux that has thrilling depth of fruit, masses of ripe tannins, and great length and finesse on the finish. This brilliant wine is just now seemingly on the edge of its drink window and offers immense pleasure, yet it has another 30-40 years of life ahead of it. Along with the 2015 and 2016, it’s the greatest wine made at this estate in the past two decades.

A cold, wet spring was followed by a lovely summer and autumn, with hot days and cool nights - perfect for developing the deep, rich colour and aromatic range that's evident here. What a beautiful wine! It has power and elegance, an incredible dense and feathered texture with silky tannins, and the confidence to simply settle into itself. As the glass unfurls you get liquorice, heavy smoke notes, pencil lead and cassis. It's still young and has decades ahead of it. Harvest ran from 23 September to 12 October, giving a yield of 37hl/ha. 60% new oak. 3.52pH.

(95+ points) To reiterate, the 2010 Rauzan Segla is like a super-duper version of the 1986. Displaying fabulous density, an inky purple color and a superb nose of forest floor with a hint of menthol as well as loads of creme de cassis, mocha and touches of chocolate and subtle oak, this full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine represents only 45% of the estate’s production. It is certainly not for those who can’t wait a few years for it to round into shape, as I suspect it needs at least 5-8 years of bottle-age, but it should last for half a century or more.- RP

It was picked from September 23 to October 7. The bouquet is incredibly intense: potent blackberry and boysenberry fruit, a little richer than I recall, perhaps borrowing some of the luxuriance of the 2009 Rauzan-Ségla. With time, there are touches of pencil lead that become more conspicuous. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin and a fine line of acidity. This is the most masculine Rauzan-Ségla in recent years, a little drier and more serious. The palate is very closed at the moment, a Margaux with a large sign declaring that it is unwise to approach for another few years. Brooding and introspective, you can admire its balance and breeding, though it does not go out of its way to give pleasure at the moment, so I would recommend the previous vintage for that. Outstanding, but don’t touch for now. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château. -- Neal Martin

Flashy style of Margaux, with alluring warm cocoa and black tea aromatics followed by cashmere-textured plum sauce, steeped fig and blackberry confiture notes. The well-integrated structure makes this seem almost accessible now, but the ample length and a smoldering tobacco note make a case for cellaring. Best from 2014 through 2030. 9,666 cases made. — JM

Cropped over four weeks instead of three because of the uneven flowering of the Merlot the Rauzan-Segla delivers 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot 3.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times it has a very "strict" tightly wound bouquet. It takes time to open up with faint notes of shellfish inflecting the very fresh blackberry and graphite fruit. The palate is very well balanced with saturated tannins vibrant acidity that Cabernet Sauvignon (yet again) imparting graphite and mineralité into the wine. Quite linear towards the finish long in the mouth. A great wine...though I suspect that the 2009 may turn out to be the pick of the two.

Aged for 18 months in approximately 50% new oak. Wow. This is a blockbuster of a wine showing abundant dark red fruit on the nose with mocha roasted coffee and vanilla. With more power and precision than most other of the Margaux wines in 2010 this offers serious structure and ageability. Everything is in total harmony here - just incredible. An amazing effort this is one of the top wines of the apppelation. It will be long lived and will evolve beautifully for three or more decades.
