James Halliday, March 2014

This is the product of a joint venture between Chapoutier and Giaconda. Good colour; a very complex wine, with an array of spice, sweet leather, earth and smoked meat aromas, the medium-bodied palate picking up on all of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2011

92+ Rated, no tasting note given. These Chapoutier wines are sometimes reviewed by my colleagues David Schildknect in his Languedoc-Roussillon report and Lisa Perrotti-Brown in her reviews of Australian wines, so I will...

Wine Spectator, January 2012

Chewy tannins wrap around a generous, transparent core of blackberry and currant fruit, picking up pepper notes as the finish lingers. Needs time to settle. Not imported into the U.S. Best from 2015 through 2019. 300...

Chapoutier is one of the oldest wine producers in the Rhone Valley with a history that dates back to 1808. For the last two hundred years, the estate has been producing some of the greatest wines in the Rhone Valley. Quality improved and Chapoutier gained international recognition under Michel Chapoutier’s leadership. This massive negociant and winery produces single-vineyard expressions and classic wines from a range of appellations in the north and south of the valley. Today, their range also includes wines from some Roussillon appellations as well as projects in Portugal and Australia.

In 1997, true to his pioneering spirit, Michel Chapoutier set out to explore the terroirs of the oldest continent, Australia, where he bought land and joined forces with major winemaking families.

An encounter with a brilliant and passionate winemaker, Rick Kintzbrunner, and his nephew Peter Graham, led to a new joint venture with the iconic Giaconda Estate in Beechworth. Since 2007, they have been playing on their complementary know-how and experience to produce a racy Shiraz on the specific granite soil of Beechworth in the foothills of the Victorian Alps.

This new Shiraz wine known as "Ergo Sum" is a project at the old Nantua vineyard site less than two miles from Giaconda.

Made from 100% Syrah planted on granitic soil, Ergo Sum has a deep garnet-red color. Dark fruit flavors (blackberry) accompany some notes of graphite and flinstone. Spice and black peppers flavors reflect the expression of this granitic terroir. A firm tannic structure provides an exceptional length.

The grapes are de-stemmed then fermented and macerated in concrete tanks with regular punchdowns. Maturation is 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.
