Powerful, thick, dense, rich, bright and concentrated with layer after layer of fruit, there is no denying the level of quality found here. But I have admit, my friends were right, there is no reason to open this for at...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2014

As to three single parcel releases, I reviewed the 2010 Cote Rotie La Mouline earlier this year, but was more than happy to taste it again (lucky me) for this report. Incorporating a full 11% of Viognier and coming from...

Wine Spectator, August 2014

This smolders from the start, with Turkish coffee and warm ganache notes out front, backed by steeped currant, warmed fig and Black Forest cake flavors. The well-structured finish is layered with charcoal and mesquite...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, December 2011

Smudgy, this is their La Tâche! Lots of heady appeal. Long with violets and liquorice on the nose and then lots of sinew on the finish. Extremely youthful. Great freshness on the finish. 18.5/20

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Cote-Rotie appellation. It shelters a unique vineyard where the vines and the wines have been famous for 2,400 years. Arriving in the region in 1924 at the age of 14, Etienne began his career at Vidal-Fleury, participating in its development and working his way up to the position of cellar-master before leaving to establish his own company. He has vinified 67 harvests in Cote-Rotie.

In 1961, although still very young, Marcel Guigal took over management of the establishment from his father who was stricken suddenly with total blindness. In 1973, his wife Bernadette joined him and they worked together to develop the family business. In 1975, their son Philippe was born and is today the estate’s winemaker. With his wife Eve, he represents the third generation to continue the family business, in the service of the great wines of the Rhone Valley.

Their hard work and perseverance enabled them to purchase the Vidal-Fleury Establishment in the mid ‘80s and in 1995, they acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, an ancient fort built in the 12th century, later repurposed into a Renaissance chateau during the 16th century. In a state of neglect and terrible disrepair, Guigal has taken on a colossal renovation, spanning nearly 11 years with over 100 people working on the project.

The Chateau d’Ampuis has become the headquarters of the Guigal Estate while the offices and the cellars remain in the ancient small village of Ampuis. While their vineyards span the length and breadth of what the Rhone Valley offers, the heart of the winery’s production is still Cote-Rotie, whose ultimate expression can be found in Guigal’s most famous releases: La Landonne, La Turque, and La Mouline.

The 2010 Guigal Cote Rotie la Mouline is a truly exceptional wine that embodies the elegance and power of Syrah from the Northern Rhone region of France. With its deep red color and complex flavors, this wine is a true masterpiece.

Upon first glance, the wine captivates with its deep red hue, hinting at the intensity and character that lies within. The nose is greeted with a seductive blend of Turkish coffee and warm ganache, followed by notes of steeped currant, fig, and Black Forest cake. These aromas transport the senses to a world of decadence and richness.

On the palate, the wine reveals its well-structured nature, with layers of charcoal, mesquite, and bay leaves intertwining with the primary flavors. The density and cut of this wine are truly remarkable, offering a velvet-like texture that defies its heft and structure. It is a wine that demands attention and reverence.

Renowned wine critics have recognized the exceptional quality of this wine. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 99 points, noting its density, cut, and range. Jancis Robinson, a highly respected wine critic, praised its youthful appeal and freshness, awarding it a score of 95. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a perfect score of 100, describing it as alluring, sexy, and impressive. Jeff Leve, from TheWineCellarInsider.com, also awarded it a perfect score of 100, applauding its power, density, and concentration.

This wine is a true masterpiece that showcases the best of what the Cote Rotie appellation has to offer. While it is already stunning in its youth, it has the potential to age gracefully for decades to come. For those who appreciate the finest expressions of Syrah, the 2010 Guigal Cote Rotie la Mouline is a must-have addition to any collection.
