Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Bolgheri estate which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma, also home to Sassicaia. The estate is one of the icon wineries of Italy, producing some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany, grown in the alluvial, volcanic, and marine-based soils which comprise the region’s terroir.

Founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in 1981, Ornellaia’s first vineyard plantings were in 1982 and the new winery started operations with the 1985 vintage. Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi became co-owners of the estate in 2002, but since 2005, the estate has been exclusively owned by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Grapes which are not designated for the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-styled release Ornellaia, one of the first Super Tuscans, are "declassified" to the production of Le Serre Nuove, which usually has more Merlot, and sees less oak influence. The winery produces several other labels, including Le Volte, a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Sauvignon Blanc, Poggio alla Gazze, and Ornus, a sweet, late harvest wine from Petit Manseng.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also owns the Masseto winery and estate, which produces an equally world-renowned and lauded single-vineyard Merlot.

The 2010 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto from Tuscany, Italy is a truly monumental wine that is sure to leave you breathless and speechless. With a deep red color that shimmers in the glass, this wine is a sight to behold. The nose is filled with a captivating bouquet of dark cherry, chocolate, baking spice, and tobacco smoke. These aromas lift off the glass in thin veils and magical puffs, showcasing the exceptional quality and seamless integration of the wine.

On the palate, the 2010 Masseto displays a depth and grace that is truly impressive. Full-bodied with super integrated tannins, this wine exudes intense currant and berry character. It possesses a classic quality reminiscent of top Pomerol wines from exceptional years like 2009. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine an astounding score of 98 points, praising its beauty and potential. James Suckling also gave it a score of 98 points, describing it as a pure Merlot wonder with integrated tannins and intense fruit character. Wine Spectator awarded it 95 points, highlighting its elegant structure and dusty, assertive tannins. Wine Enthusiast bestowed upon it a score of 97 points, applauding its structure, finesse, and mesmerizing depth. Decanter gave it a score of 96 points, noting its nuanced aromas and balanced palate. Jeff Leve from TheWineCellarInsider.com awarded it 98 points, describing it as a stunner with concentrated layers of fruit, chocolate, and earthy sensations.

With an alcohol percentage of 14.5%, this wine is powerful yet balanced, showcasing the exceptional quality of the Merlot grape. It is recommended to cellar this wine for a few more years to allow for additional complexity to develop. However, if you can't resist the temptation, decanting it for a few hours will also help to reveal its true potential.

Overall, the 2010 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto is a wine of unparalleled beauty and finesse. It is a true masterpiece that represents the pinnacle of Italian winemaking.
