Opaque and black-purple in color the bouquet is backward and reticient because of its youth but it's not hard to eek out scents of crisp blueberries and hints of provencal herbs knowing that more will be revealed with time. The pure fruit expression finds the aromas resonating on the palate with some lively acidity keeping the flavors fresh and vibrant. There's a hint of some spicy tannin on the fringe of the finish that supports some concentrated and complex black fruits that will unfurl with time. Beautifully balanced this is a great Rhone-styled statement from the cooler regions of Australia that will be looking quite smart in 5-7 years.

Dark as night the opaque purple hue lures you into a nose of dark berry cured meat roasted herbs and graphite. Serious nose for a value-driven wine! Textbook Rhone-esque mouthfeel with a waft of mint and eucalyptus... Dark as night the opaque purple hue lures you into a nose of dark berry cured meat roasted herbs and graphite. Serious nose for a value-driven wine! Textbook Rhone-esque mouthfeel with a waft of mint and eucalyptus. Plenty of stuffing here - with layer upon layer of blackberry spicy cassis and cracked black pepper. On the back end there's a kiss of toasty oak infused with thyme and black olives. Bring on the grilled steak! Great QPR - this is the perfect red for entertaining.

Label

A spicy Shiraz from the vineyards of Central Victoria brightens with a boost of Viognier for aroma and balance, as often practiced in France’s most highly regarded appellation of the Northern Rhone Valley, Cote Rotie. The grapes grown in this Australian vineyard were planted on 19th century French rootstocks, another nod to the French tradition and influence in this new world wine.

Winery

Terlato & Chapoutier, Domaine

Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier is a collaboration between Anthony J. Terlato of Terlato Wines International and Michel Chapoutier of Rhone Valley fame. The partnership was formed in 1998 when Michel Chapoutier discovered an area in the Australian Pyrenees in Victoria which he envisioned could produce great wines. They visited the property and the venture was soon formed.

From 1998 to 2000, 46 acres, predominantly Shiraz, were planted on an eastern-facing slope. Due to drought, the vineyard struggled for a time, but in 2004 Michel proclaimed 17 of the acres had produced a wine that was ready to be bottled. And so Terlato & Chapoutier lieu dit Malakoff Shiraz was born, a label the partners envisioned will become a celebrated wine brand.

In addition to Malakoff, a small production of Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz-Viognier 2004 was produced in Victoria. It is a blend practiced in France’s renowned Cote Rotie — a style with which Michel is familiar and expert in execution. The Viognier lift the aromas and flavors of the Shiraz producing a distinctly different style that complements grilled meats with a lot of versatility.
