Brace yourself for fireworks into at least mid-century! Weinbach’s 2010 Gewurztraminer Altenbourg Selection de Grains Nobles leads with Kummel (caraway) liquor, Chartreuse-like herbal and floral essences, peat-like smokiness of Islay malt intensity, candied lemon rind, high-toned maraschino and almond extract as well as intimations of quince preserves, honey and caramel that go on to viscously, creamily and soothingly coat the palate. Cinnamon stick and citrus rind impingements lend counterpoint and gushing primary juiciness of grapefruit and pineapple enable a significant measure of sheer refreshment such as one seldom encounters in a wine this ennobled and sweet. This superbly complex offering should merit following into mid-century. - David Schildknecht
