Decanter, December 2019

We return to a more normal balance and concentration in 2011; this is still powerful, elegant, still full of Issan character, but you will not have to wait so long to enjoy this wine. Floral notes evident, followed up by...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, April 2012

Cropped between 12th and 26th September the d'Issan '11 is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot that was cropped at 36hl/ha. The nose is closed and minerally tightly wound with scents of limestone and granite...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2012

(90-92)A dense wine that's full of black plums and firm tannins. It has weight at the front and juicy freshness on the finish.

View From The Cellar, March 2012

At Château d’Issan this year, Emmanuel Cruse did not panic and start picking too early, as the merlot harvest started on the 12th of September and was completed on the 16th, while the cabernet sauvignon was collected...

The 2011 Château d'Issan offers pleasant blackberry and raspberry scented mixed with pressed iris flower on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a pliant opening, approachable and smooth in texture. Not deep, quite...

jamessuckling.com, March 2015

Gorgeous aromas of orange peel, mint, bay leaf and currants. Full to medium body, chewy tannins and a lightly austere finish. Walnut. Needs more time to soften.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2014

Leafy, forest floor, cedar and cassis aromas, medium bodied, accessible and forward, you can drink this cassis and olive filled wine young, while waiting for the 2010 and 2009 to develop. Read more...

Wine Spectator, March 2014

A gentle, elegant style, with a lightly dusty frame around the core of crushed plum and blackberry fruit. Shows a twinge of cocoa on the finish, with an echo of warm stone at the very end. Best from 2016 through 2024...

Chateau d’Issan is located in the center of the Margaux appellation and rated as a third growth in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Mild weather, moderated by proximity to the sea and the Gironde Estuary, provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The vines are, on average, 35 years old. The estate has 44 hectares of vines in Margaux, 5 in Haut-Medoc and 10 in Bordeaux Superieur.

Chateau d’Issan has a long history dating back to the 12th century when it was a fiefdom with the name of La Mothe-Cantenac. It already had an established reputation long before the 1855 classification, reportedly served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henri Plantagenet, future King of England, on 18th May 1152.

The estate has been handed down from generation to generation through inheritance and marriage until from 1575 onwards, it has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family who contracted their name and renamed the property “Issan”.

Chateau d’Issan expresses the exquisite bouquet so characteristic of Margaux, and stands out for its suppleness, subtlety, elegance and long aging potential.

The wine is made from the old vines in the Chateau d’Issan enclosure in the middle of the Margaux appellation. The soil is mainly comprised of surface gravel on a clay subsoil, contributing to optimal ripeness and freshness in the estate’s two grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, half of which are new.
