The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, slightly furry tannins on the entry. The acidity it keen and citric, lending this more vigour than Montrose, whilst the finish has fine precision and length. Jean-Guillaume has fashioned a very fine Saint Estephe for the vintage.

This is really excellent for the vintage with currants, dark berries and minerals on the nose and palate. Full body, firm tannins and a long finish. It’s a bit linear but racy and superb. One of the best of the vintage...   This is really excellent for the vintage with currants, dark berries and minerals on the nose and palate. Full body, firm tannins and a long finish. Medium to full-bodied, very firm, grainy textured and with a great core of youthful black fruits, the palate reveals loads of savory layers on the very long finish. This is very youthful and slowly maturing—a very impressive showing for this vintage! - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A sense of extraction is overwhelmed by the huge, ripe fruit. It shows velvet texture at first, but then the tannins come on strongly, leaving a wine that will age over many years. Drink from 2022.

Perhaps this explains why this doesn't quite reach the heights that I have found elsewhere, just lacking some balance compared to other 2011 wines that I have tasted recently. The spice and black fruit notes are clear and highly attractive, and it's powerful and has character, but it needs a flick of freshness to emphasise the purity of fruit and lift the finish. Nevertheless, this does have a sense of energy and a gourmet touch through the mid-palate once it opens in the glass. 37% of production was used for the grand vin, due to the hail.

The wine is soft, with polished round tannins and a medium body. In the mouth, the wine has added weight and filled out in its texture since last tasted. The wine is already accessible and can be enjoyed young, or allowed to age for more complexity. This has tightened up a little in bottle, which is good, and represents a fine effort considering the hail that came at the end of the season.--Non-blind Cos-d'Estournel vertical (December 2015). Drink now through 2025. – JM
