The 2011 Santenots du Milieu is gloriously pure and refined this year, taking advantage of the inherent elegance of the vintage. The superb bouquet offers up a classic mélange of cassis, black cherries, espresso, woodsmoke, dark soil tones and fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and shows off stunning backend energy, with a fine core, ripe tannins and a very, very long, transparent and still quite youthful finish. I love “cooler fruit toned” vintages like 2011 in this vineyard, as it seems to me that the greatness of this terroir really stands out when the fruit does not get too ripe and generous. The 2011 is certainly a classic vintage for this wine and it should start to drink stunningly well from the eight or nine year mark out from the vintage. (Drink between 2021-2045)
