The unusually open nose expresses itself with notes of oak, earth and quite deeply pitched scents of plum, cassis, wild berries, underbrush and a hint of the sauvage. There is plenty of muscle to the supple, round and admirably pure large-bodied flavors that possess very firm but relatively fine-grained tannins on the impressively persistent and powerful finish. This is a notably ripe wine in the context of the vintage and one that should also amply reward mid to longer-term cellaring. Drink: 2023+

The 2011 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 40% whole-cluster fruit. It offers an attractive, floral bouquet with violet petals infusing the dark cherry and boysenberry fruit, the mineralite eventually surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. Nice structure here with pure citrus fruit and a crisp, dark cherry and boysenberry finish that is full of vigor – quite similar in fact to the Charmes-Chambertin in style. Pure, focused and sappy, this red features cherry, raspberry, licorice and spice flavors, allied to a vibrant structure. Elegant, harmonious and long, with a mineral hint on the long finish. This is all about finesse. Best from 2016 through 2026. – BS
