The 2011 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is a lovely wine that exudes bold intensity, sharp lines and a cheerful personality. The talented Elisabetta Geppetti and her winemaking team are on a roll in these recent vintages. That deft winemaking hand is evident in the linearity of the berry fruit and the purity of the lush cherry flavors. Added complexity is offered thanks to spicy notes of leather and tobacco at the back. - Monica Larner

Rich, dense and deep, offering complex flavors of strawberry, raspberry, gunflint and menthol. Finishes very long and suave, with serious but smooth tannins. “The 2012 will be even better,” owner Elisabetta Geppetti told me, “because we have introduced some bigger oak casks of 10 and 20 hectoliters as well as 500-liter tonneaux to ensure that the wine will be less dominated by oak in the future.” I found it funny to hear her say that, since the use of oak at Le Pupille has always been very judicious, especially compared to some lumberyard Morellinos being made. - Ian D'Agata

The Riserva represents the roots of Fattoria Le Pupille, being the first wine made by the young winery—even before the creation of the DOC Morellino in 1978. The Riserva is the full expression of Sangiovese and the wild strength of Maremma.

Winery

Fattoria Le Pupille

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
