jebdunnuck.com, September 2012

(93-96 points) Easily the most rich and concentrated, the 2011 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes might just be the wine of the vintage. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the balance a mix of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2022

Pressed flowers, black cherries and dark chocolate all appear on the nose of the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. Tasted from magnum, this is an impressively full-bodied, rich, velvety wine, with a long...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, August 2014

Full bodied, rich and polished, the fruit is fresh, ripe and expresses purity, length and supple textures. Produced from a blend 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, the wine reached 15.5 alcohol. Read more...

Wine Spectator, October 2013

Very solid for the vintage, with ripe, fleshy layers of plum compote, raspberry preserves and blackberry pâte de fruit. Lots of anise and graphite line the finish, with ample depth in reserve. Best from 2015 through 2028...

Domaine de la Janasse, in the Southern Rhone, was founded in 1967 by Aime Sabon. Having returned from military service, he took over management of the family vineyards and formed an estate label, named after the family farm in the locality of “La Janasse”. A cellar was built in 1973 and new plots were acquired, growing the total holdings from 15 hectares to more than 90 today.

In 1991, after earning diplomas in viticulture, oenology and marketing, Aime’s son Christophe Sabon was given the keys to the cellar. His sister Isabelle joined the team in 2001.

La Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation to give complexity and depth to their different wines. They produce 3 red and 2 white Chateauneuf du Pape wines, red, white and rose Cotes-du-Rhone, and a number of IGP wines.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape comes from four plots of different soil types, that marry perfectly in the finished wine. A southern pebbly soil that brings body and power; a Chaupin-like soil for freshness and acidity; a red clay pebbly soil in the north of the appellation that brings structure and body; and finally a sandy-limestone soil for smoothness.
