Jean-Michel Chartron has produced a stellar bottle of Bâtard-Montrachet in 2011. As is well known, the Chartrons’ Bâtard-Montrachet hails from Domaine Ramonet’s parcel, as the two domaines effect a swap of grapes each year at harvest time, with Noël Ramonet getting his Chevalier-Montrachet from Jean-Michel Chartron in exchange for Bâtard-Montrachet grapes. The 2011 is pure magic, soaring from the glass in an utterly classic blaze of apple, pear, deep and complex soil tones, a touch of smokiness, orange zest and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very intense, with a rock solid core of fruit, a great signature of soil, zesty acids and laser-like focus on the suave, powerful and supremely elegant finish. This is an example of Bâtard-Montrachet that approaches the great synthesis of vintage character and terroir that is so very evident in so many great examples of Le Montrachet this year.
