Much like the Musigny, this is really beautifully spicy but here there are intense earth and sauvage undertones to the mostly wild red berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and plenty of minerality to the focused, energetic and overtly powerful large-scaled flavors that culminate in an austere finish that displays noticeable gas which accentuates the firmness of the tannins. Even so, this is clearly a long-distance runner and like the Griotte, I would strongly advise buying this only with the intent to cellar it for at least a decade.

Mid to dark crimson but no hint of blue. Firm and rich and dense. But actually a top layer of fragility that adds interest. Very rich and sweet. Tense and nervous. Lots of autumnal undergrowth. Lots of autumnal undergrowth. Reverberant. Slightly bitter finish in a good way. Not that intense but very satisfying. (18/20)

The oak comes through stronger than on Drouhin-Laroze’s Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2011 compared to Bruno Clair. The fruit is broodier and only reluctantly reveals blackberry and wild raspberry scents, touches of orange blossom later. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, thickset tannins that lend this weight and muscle. Bold and forward with touches of spice and white pepper toward the finish, this is an assertive Clos de Bèze that will require several years in bottle.- NM
