Decanter, March 2017

Less celebrated than 2009 and 2010, and you can feel the fruit is a little less intense through the mid-palate. Heaped with blackberry and morello cherries, the fruit is carefully placed though, well balanced and with...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2014

As so often with Montrose, this is a powerful, concentrated and very structured wine. Dense tannins are paired with rich black fruits, although at this stage the wine also has a sense of austerity. Power, severity and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

(93+ points) Somewhat lost in the shadow of the 2010 and 2009 duo, the 2011 Montrose is a somewhat firm, old-school wine, but it has plenty of depth and character and represents a good value for readers prepared to be...

Wine Spectator, March 2014

Features some lovely plum, black currant and blackberry fruit, already melded into the core, while a pure, long and rather regal structure runs through the finish, letting extra charcoal and pebble notes play out. Offers...

jamessuckling.com, February 2014

This is a tannic, chewy Montrose with lots of spice, berry and earth character. Full body, chewy and fruity. Intense tannins. Try in 2018 when the tannins soften.

View From The Cellar, March 2012

92+ The 2011 Château Montrose has really turned out well, with a great elegance and very well-managed tannins for the vintage. The deep, pure and classy nose wafts from the glass in a blend of cassis, dark berries, cigar...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, July 2012

The first year when the new vineyards were included but only a small part apparently. Dark crimson. Very rich and glamorous on the nose. Hugely flattering and really fills the gaps on the palate. Racy but ripe. Hervé...

Fresh herbs, cigar wrapper, cedar chest and blackberry aromas pair with light tannins, medium body and a spicy, fresh, cassis and black cherry finish. Read more...

Vinous, August 2014

Bright dark ruby. Expressive, soil-driven aromas of blackberry, raspberry, rose petal and minerals. Bright and juicy, with flinty black fruit and mineral flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes lightly...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.
