The Fallers' 2011 Pinot Gris Altenbourg - like its Sainte Catherine counterpart - manages to integrate mid-teens residual sugar without engendering more than the merest hint of sweetness. As in vintage 2010, this outclasses the Sainte Catherine bottling by a considerable measure, combining alluring creaminess with fresh peach juiciness and delightfully integrating honey, nutmeg, peach kernel, and a liver pate-like richness of pungent herb and pepper-laced smoked animal innards. A hint of heat and faintly sharp prickle of botrytis don-t significantly mar what is otherwise a sumptuously rich and sustained not to mention complex finish. Don't hesitate to follow some of this beauty through 2025. - David Schildknecht
