Here too there is a background application of wood that is sufficiently subtle so as to allow the expressive nose of plum earth wild dark berries and forest floor aromas to shine. There is real size and weight to the very solidly concentrated large-scaled flavors that are supported by ripe tannins that are also unusually fine-grained in the context of the appellation all wrapped in a mouth coating powerful and driving finish. This very firm effort will require 12 to 15 years of bottle age to arrive at its full apogee.

The 2011 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru, which is populated by 54-year-old vines with a propensity for small berries due to millerandage, has a fuller and more aromatic bouquet when compared directly against the Charmes-Chambertin 2011, perfumed with lascivious ripe strawberry and cranberry aromas suffused with cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and fine tannins. It has a pleasant build in the mouth and yet the finish is understated, classic in style and very refined. This is just a Mazoyeres that you will want to abscond with. Drink now-2022. - Neal Martin
