Wine Spectator, August 2014

A dark and inky red, featuring violet, black currant, cedar, sandalwood and iron aromas and flavors. Nonetheless, this comes across as elegant, even as the tannins prove formidable on the finish. A terrific young wine in...

Decanter, September 2023

2011 was marked by very hot, dry weather. Growth was slowed by cooler conditions in June and July, but it was an earlier-than-average harvest. This is a very dark, post-modern version of Ornellaia, with prune, tobacco...

janeanson.com, September 2023

Still young at 12 years old, this was a hot, dry vintage with a growth cycle around 10 days in advance of normal, and yet is filled with elegance and juice. Still very young, with the vibrant plum colour alone making you...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2014

The 2011 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia lives up to the legacy of this important wine, thanks to its extreme intensity and its skillfully crafted bouquet. The excellent quality of fruit stands clear, despite the heat of the...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2014

Another impressive effort from the celebrated Ornellaia estate. it opens with aromas of black berries, plum, blue flower and hints of balsamic herbs. The rich palate delivers a core of fleshy black cherry accented with...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, July 2014

Dark lustrous crimson. Warm graphite and, it has to be said, strong Cabernet aromas. Very appetising and vigorous with fine tannins on the finish and no excess alcohol or oak. Extremely hedonistic without being sweet...

jamessuckling.com, January 2015

A bit of a monster with dark chocolate and cherry fruits. An assertive, bold wine with oak served up in thick slices, topped with slightly jammy cassis and blackberry. Forthright, bold and dense; very showy and boldly...

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Bolgheri estate which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma, also home to Sassicaia. The estate is one of the icon wineries of Italy, producing some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany, grown in the alluvial, volcanic, and marine-based soils which comprise the region’s terroir.

Founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in 1981, Ornellaia’s first vineyard plantings were in 1982 and the new winery started operations with the 1985 vintage. Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi became co-owners of the estate in 2002, but since 2005, the estate has been exclusively owned by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Grapes which are not designated for the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-styled release Ornellaia, one of the first Super Tuscans, are "declassified" to the production of Le Serre Nuove, which usually has more Merlot, and sees less oak influence. The winery produces several other labels, including Le Volte, a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Sauvignon Blanc, Poggio alla Gazze, and Ornus, a sweet, late harvest wine from Petit Manseng.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also owns the Masseto winery and estate, which produces an equally world-renowned and lauded single-vineyard Merlot.

The desire to nurture the estate’s exceptional qualities has shaped Ornellaia’s philosophy since the beginning. The flagship wine Ornellaia is one of the first and finest Super Tuscans, a cuvee of Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
