The Wine Independent, February 2023

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Leoville Las Cases drifts out with fragrant notions of warm cassis, dark chocolate, roses, and dried mint with hints of iron ore and forest floor. Fragrant black fruit absolutely...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2015

This combines considerable power and concentration with rich, impressive fruits. It has both style and elegance, with density to give it great aging potential. The tannins are firm while also having a velvet texture. The...

Standing out for its sheer purity and class, the 2012 Leoville-Las Cases is about as seamless as they come, with medium to full-bodied richness, fabulous notes of crème de cassis, cedary spice, plums, spice and wood...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2022

Wafting from the glass with aromas of rich berries, plums, loamy soil, baking spices and pencil shavings, the 2012 Léoville Las Cases is medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with impressive concentration for the...

The tannins are noticeably bigger than the other St Juliens in the lineup, with more grip through the palate and you feel the structure exerting a gentle pressure at the close of play. There are fruits here also, in the...

Wine Spectator, January 2015

This is among the tightest wines at this early stage, with a wall of smoldering charcoal holding the core of dark plum, blackberry paste and cassis in reserve. The sleek finish shows admirable length and a...

jamessuckling.com, February 2015

So pure on the nose with aromas of blackcurrants, raspberries and licorice. Hints of stones. Full body, polished yet chewy tannins and a long and racy finish. Layered tannins. Citrusy undertones. Bright acidity. Better in...

Tobacco, cedar wood, blackberries and fresh herbs create the nose. On the palate, the wine delivers a classic blast of fresh, concentrated, cassis, salty, mineral driven tannins and a chewy, long, cassis filled finish...

Structured palate with deep-scented fruit and potential, but lacking the extra excitement and distinction that this terroir can provide.

Vinous, September 2022

The 2012 Léoville Las-Cases is much more closed on the nose, quite strict with blackberry, cedar and gravelly aromas, later hints of cassis and a splash of soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fairly oaky entry, though...

One of the oldest Medoc estates, Domaine de Leoville belonged to some of the wealthiest and most influential noble French families before it was acquired by the Las Cases family. Like many properties after the French Revolution, the estate was divided between 1826 and 1840 into the three Leovilles we know today: Leoville-Las Cases, Leoville-Poyferre and Leoville-Barton.

Chateau Leoville-Las Cases was created, thanks to a kind of birthright, from three-fifths of the original estate, including the very heart of the property. The Grand Vin has therefore been sourced from the best part of the original terroir since the 17th century.

Pierre Jean, Adolphe, and Gabriel de Las Cases were successive heirs to the property until 1900, when Theophile Skawinski purchased a share in the estate and became its manager. Leoville-Las Cases has now been managed by the same family since the late 19th century and is today represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, sole owner of the chateau and proprietor of Chateau Potensac in the Medoc and Chateau Nenin in Pomerol.

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the heart of the original Leoville estate. These are located mainly in the Clos Leoville-Las Cases, which you pass as you leave the village of Saint-Julien for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60 hectares producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Las Cases.

Introducing the 2012 Leoville-Las Cases, a remarkable Bordeaux Blend from the renowned St Julien region in Bordeaux, France. With its deep red color and elegant label, this wine is a true representation of the artistry and craftsmanship of Leoville-Las Cases.

Upon first glance, the wine exudes a sense of sophistication and refinement. The deep crimson hue hints at the intensity and complexity that awaits within the glass. As you bring the glass to your nose, the aromas of blackcurrants, raspberries, and licorice immediately captivate your senses. Layers of stones and hints of mint leaf and eucalyptus add depth and intrigue to the bouquet.

On the palate, the wine reveals its true character. Medium to full-bodied, it showcases an impeccable balance between power and elegance. The concentrated flavors of dark plum, blackberry paste, and cassis are held in reserve, slowly unfurling with each sip. The sleek finish is marked by admirable length and a mouthwatering echo of iron, leaving a lasting impression.

Critics have lauded this wine for its exceptional qualities. Wine Spectator awarded it a score of 94, praising its tightness and the austerity of the vintage that works to its advantage. James Suckling bestowed a score of 93, celebrating its purity, layered tannins, and bright acidity. Wine Enthusiast gave it an impressive 96, highlighting its power, concentration, and aging potential. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it a score of 95, commending its medium to full-bodied profile, supple tannins, and charming enveloping profile. Vinous granted it a score of 92, noting its closed nature at present but acknowledging its fruit concentration and potential with bottle age.

This 2012 Leoville-Las Cases is a wine that demands attention and respect. With its exceptional quality and aging potential, it is destined to evolve gracefully over the next few decades. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, this is a wine that will leave a lasting impression on any wine enthusiast.
