Earthy aromas of tilled soil, underbrush, leather, purple flower, cedar and ripe black-skinned berry lead the way on this delicious blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. The smooth full-bodied palate doles out juicy blackberry, red currant, licorice, exotic spice, mocha and a hint of game while tightly knit but velvety tannins lend both structure and finesse. It's already compelling but give it time to fully develop. Drink 2018–2027.

Fragrant and enticing with flower petal, dried black tea and berry aromas. Full to medium body, chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Needs to come together still. Better in 2019.

A blend of cabernet sauvignon with 15 percent petit verdot, it feels dense and taut, with tannins like fine sandpaper that lend grip to the wine. Decant this an hour before serving to let its earthy notes blow off, or better yet, give it a few years in the cellar.

This is a more challenging vintage. There is a heavy layer of ripe fruit with sweet strawberry and dried blackberry that is hard to dig past in order to reach more delicate and complex nuances. The 2012 summer heat and lack of rain makes for less dimension. The wine drinks nicely now, but I would suggest a near to medium-term drinking window.- ML

Vigna d’Alceo is Castello dei Rampolla’s first biodynamic wine. It represents a union between the two generations of the Castello dei Rampolla winery: Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot as the founder Alceo, wished and biodynamic as his children, Luca and Maurizia, practice.

The wine is fermented in concrete, then aged in 500L barrels for 12-15 months and in bottle for 18-24. It fully reflects the character of the vineyard from which it originates. It is intense, warm, refined and elegant.Well-ripened red fruits blend perfectly with delicate notes of cigar and tobacco - an amazing concentration with no heaviness.

Castello dei Rampolla

Castello dei Rampolla is a family-run wine estate located in the southern valley of Chianti Classico known as the “Conca d’Oro,” the Golden Basin. The land on which it stands has been owned by the di Napoli Rampolla family since 1739.

The estate produced its first bottles of Chianti Classico in 1975. The first bottles of Sammarco, a Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Sangiovese, were released in 1982. Castello dei Rampolla began practicing biodynamic farming in 1994, producing their first biodynamic wine, D’Alceo, in 1996.
