Vinous, January 2023

The 2012 Latour…wine of the vintage? It has to be a serious contender. In this blind taste-off between the five First Growths, its quality shines through. With exceptional delineation on the nose, it just oozes class with...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2020

(96+ points) The 2012 Latour is a blend of 90.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.6% Merlot and 0.2% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet colored, the nose slowly, measuredly emerges with notions of preserved Morello cherries, baked...

The Wine Independent, February 2023

The 2012 Latour is medium to deep garnet colored. It is a little sluggish to begin, delivering oaky notes over a core of creme de cassis, baked plums, and new leather, plus hints of cast-iron pan and cigar box...

Decanter, March 2022

High-grade Cabernet Sauvignon that still remains a touch austere, with freshness and less polish than the Mouton Rothschild 2012 tasted at the same time, but with similar staying power. Latour’s 2011 vintage was the last...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2015

Deep in color, with just a hint of lightness around the edge of the glass, the wine is starting to close down. On the palate the wine is full bodied, rich, refined, polished, fresh and long, with a solid essence of fruit...

Wine Spectator, March 2015

This features a terrific, gorgeously delineated graphite note that runs from start to finish, letting the dark plum, black cherry and cassis fruit play out beautifully. Shows a lovely backdrop of charcoal and iron on the...

jamessuckling.com, February 2015

Very perfumed with hints of minerals, currants, wet earth and stones. Full-bodied, muscular and chewy. Polished tannins, tight acidity and a savory finish. Very reserved. Muscular. Better in 2019.

Chateau Latour, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most famous wine producers, is a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It’s located in Pauillac near the border with Saint-Julien.

Vines have existed on the property since the 14th century, but Chateau Latour first began producing wines of great quality in the early eighteenth century. The estate gradually came to specialize in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares in 1794.

The vineyard currently has 78 hectares in production. The grapes from the 47 hectares surrounding the chateau, known as “L’Enclos”, are used in the production of the Grand Vin. The 30 hectares outside of the Enclos are used for the Forts de Latour and the Pauillac wines. The estate is planted with about 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on gravelly hilltops and clay subsoil.

The wines of Chateau Latour need time to mature, generally at least ten or fifteen years, before they can be drunk. It is only then that the full complexity of the bouquet is expressed and the palate becomes sufficiently well integrated to be enjoyable and harmonious.

Introducing the 2012 Chateau Latour, a Bordeaux Blend hailing from the illustrious Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine exudes elegance and sophistication, showcasing the exceptional terroir and meticulous craftsmanship of Chateau Latour.

In the glass, the 2012 Chateau Latour reveals a medium to deep garnet color, captivating the eye with its rich hue. The nose slowly unravels, revealing a symphony of aromas. Preserved Morello cherries, baked blackcurrants, and blackberry compote take center stage, accompanied by subtle nuances of pencil shavings, unsmoked cigars, Chinese five spice, and sandalwood. Delicate hints of cardamom and eucalyptus dance in the background, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, this wine delivers a captivating experience. Mouth-coating black and red fruit preserves dominate, enveloping the senses with their lusciousness. The firm, grainy-textured frame adds structure and depth, while the fantastic freshness invigorates the palate. As the wine lingers, a mesmerizing firework display of lingering spices and minerals unfolds, leaving a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2012 Chateau Latour an impressive score of 96 points. Parker describes this vintage as more restrained and elegant, showcasing the superior terroir and savoir faire of Chateau Latour. The approachable tannins and evolving tertiary characters make it enjoyable now, but for those seeking the full, flamboyant swing of this wine, it is recommended to cellar it for another 5-10 years and savor it over the next 20-25 years.

Other esteemed critics have also praised this exceptional vintage. Wine Spectator awarded it a score of 95 points, highlighting its beautifully delineated graphite note and its long, slightly rigid finish. Vinous, another respected publication, gave it an impressive score of 97 points, hailing it as a serious contender for wine of the vintage. James Suckling awarded it 94 points, praising its perfumed aromas, muscular structure, and savory finish.

The 2012 Chateau Latour is a wine that embodies class and refinement. With its exceptional quality, precise balance, and longevity, this wine is a true testament to the excellence of Chateau Latour. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future indulgence, this Bordeaux Blend promises an unforgettable experience.
