(BH89-91 points) Here the moderately expressive nose is both more complex and more deeply pitched with more obvious earth, humus and underbrush tones to the dark currant and soft floral aromas. Here too there is very fine detail and even more minerality present on the medium-bodied flavors that offer fine depth and length on the slightly more firmly structured finale.

(ST88-90 points) Muskier and wilder on the nose than the village wine, showing a much darker fruit character. Juicy, sweet and wild on the palate, with a slightly meaty nuance to the black raspberry flavor. Finishes sweet and long, with dusty, fine-grained tannins. Doesn't show the eclat of the village wine today but this is richer.

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques from Domaine Armand Rousseau has an intriguing bouquet, quite complex with subtle tertiary scents infiltrating the brambly red berry fruit. This is well defined, a little laconic at first but it grows in confidence, becomes less tight-lipped. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin, a little disjointed at the moment and the oak needs time to assimilate. At the moment, the nose deserves a better palate, yet it will surely coalesce into a superior wine than it is at present. - Neal Martin
