Wine Enthusiast, April 2013

(WE93-95 points) Complex, rounded and full bodied, this wine is still reticent at the moment, hiding its rich fruit. As it develops, this will be impressive, with it’s mineral texture over apricot fruits and layers of...

The wines were closed with Diam instead of natural cork from this vintage onwards. This is green-gold in colour, and the nose is pretty closed even at six years old, with touches of straw and stone fruits that are...

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

The 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a magnificent Bordeaux Blanc that embodies elegance, complexity, and finesse. This white wine hails from the Pessac Leognan sub-region of Bordeaux, France, and is produced by the esteemed Domaine de Chevalier.

In the glass, the wine displays a beautiful golden hue, reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a field of wildflowers. Delicate aromas of dried lemons, minerals, and lilac dance on the nose, accompanied by intriguing nuances of oyster shell and iodine. These captivating scents create a sensory journey that is both tender and pretty, leaving the taster longing for more.

On the palate, the 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc unveils its true character. With a full-bodied yet refined profile, the wine showcases the complexity usually associated with red wines from Pessac-Leognan. Apricot fruits mingle harmoniously with layers of spice and wood, while a mineral texture adds depth and intrigue. The wine's rounded and full-bodied nature is complemented by a long, lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critics have heaped praise upon this exceptional vintage. James Suckling awarded it an impressive score of 95 points, describing it as "fascinating" and highlighting its unique complexity. Wine Spectator bestowed a score of 93 points, noting the wine's serious depth and mouthwatering acidity. Wine Enthusiast also recognized its potential, awarding it between 93 and 95 points and predicting that it will develop into an impressive wine with rich fruit.

The 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a wine that demands attention and appreciation. It is a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the winemakers at Domaine de Chevalier. With its ability to age gracefully, this wine is a treasure that will continue to evolve and captivate for years to come. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a top-flight Bordeaux Blanc that embodies the essence of its terroir.
