Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru from Maume-Tawse has a slightly disjointed nose at first, takes time to tuck its shirt in, but it is worth the wait because it reveals attractive, very natural and harmonious brambly red fruit, particularly raspberry and cranberry, both suffused with palpable tension. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, complete and harmonious, focused and very elegant. This is a truly wonderful contribution to the vintage with impressive terroir and winemaking skill. - Neal Martin

(BH90-92 points) Here the wood is no longer subtle as it fights with the otherwise fresh and layered nose of distinctly floral-inflected aromas of ripe red currant and plum. There is a lush and fleshy mouth feel to the equally ripe middle weight flavors that are delicious but don't quite have the same depth on the lingering finish. To be sure this is perfectly good but I prefer the overall complexity of the Lavaut.

Plush and broad on entry but classically dry and backward today, showing a medicinal red cherry flavor. Larger in the mouth in the early going than the Mazis but without that wine's clarity or inner-mouth tension. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. This wine will need considerable patience to fill in. 91+
