The 2012 Chardonnay Isobel (980 cases) comes from 31-year-old vines planted in the Charles Heintz Vineyard, and spent 13 months in 39% new oak. It offers classic notes of tangerine oil, apple blossoms, caramelized citrus and a wet stone minerality. Full-bodied with terrific fruit purity and a subtle hint of oak, it should drink well for 7-8 years. The clonal material is California clone 4. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The 2012 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is quite delicate and soft, with attractive yellow stone fruits, spices, mint, chamomile and wild flowers. The 2012 can be enjoyed today or cellared for a handful of years. Subtlety and nuance are the signatures. Charles Heintz has the lowest acidity of the Chardonnay sites DuMOL works with, which gives the wine much of its openness and early accessibility. Today, the Isobel is a bit less expressive than it was last year.

This is quite expressive, showing saline notes intermixed with wet stone and flint complemented by pear, green apple, and citrus oil. This carries a rich, full-bodied profile layered with orchard fruits and spice. The oak is well integrated giving a range of flavor without any obstruction of the pure fruit. Tightly coiled and vibrant at the moment, this is showing wonderful now with a touch of air and should continue to impress for another 7 years..

On the palate, a wash of lemon anchored in lemon curd. Juicy up front and rich in the mid-palate, this fans out into a long, acid-driven finish. Definitely Burgundian in style, yet showing the traits of pure California fruit – the powerful elegance of Chardonnay in California soils and sun. Still young, this Sonoma Coast Chard evolves and changes with time in the glass with tropical hints emerging and a fine, mineral thread running from start to finish. Enjoy now with a decant and over the next 4-10 years.
