This wine offers broad shoulders with good structure and a rich texture. This Barolo opens to dark fruit nuances with blackberry and dried cherries. That dark fruit is enhanced by oak-driven tones of allspice, smoke and tobacco. The wine shows the potential to age, but it is also one of those Nebbiolo-based efforts that will offer satisfaction in the near-term just as successfully. - Monica Larner

Fragrant and structured, this offers enticing scents of rose, violet, menthol, underbrush and a whiff of leather. The juicy palate offers layers of crushed raspberry, fleshy black cherry, cinnamon, clove, tobacco and a hint of anise alongside velvety tannins. It's already accessible. Drink through 2022.

Bright red cherry and cola on the nose with subtle sassafras and red rose aromas. Racy on the palate with bracingly fresh minerality from start to finish, bright red fruit flavors, and also a hint of salinity that makes your mouth water (and makes you want to pour another glass!). Tight, chalky tannins on the finish are balanced by this wine’s intrinsic acidity. Super fresh and youthful, and deliciously approachable with 6 years of age; yet also underlined by a filigreed structure that suggests another 5-10 years of aging.

Label

Fontanafredda Barolo Serralunga is fermented using traditional methods and spends 15 days in stainless steel vats with a floating cap at a controlled temperature (30-31° C). It stays in contact with the skins for 15 additional days. It is then aged for two years in French oak casks from Allier. The period of time it spends in bottle for further maturation depends on the vintage, but is never less than 12 months.

The color is garnet-red with ruby highlights that take on a slightly orange tone over time. It has a clear-cut, intense nose with overtones of vanilla, spices, withered roses and underbrush. The taste is dry, but soft, full-bodied, velvety and well-balanced, and is very long-lasting.
