The 2012 Gevrey Chambertin En Champs has a smooth, harmonious, latte-tinged bouquet with ample red berry fruit, if not quite the pedigree of the best En Champs that I have tasted in this vintage. The palate is well balanced with slightly chewy tannin, impressive depth with those touches of bell pepper, complemented by cranberry and pomegranate notes, easing back gently toward the finish with a twist of orange rind. Here the nose is slightly riper with even more complexity to the intensely earthy wild dark currant, humus and underbrush suffused nose. There is outstanding concentration to the dense and serious but not particularly rustic middle weight flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a wonderfully deep, mouth coating and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a very impressive Gevrey villages and one that should reward up to a decade of cellaring.
