(NM94-96 points) The La Mondotte is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc picked between 9th and 18th October and matured entirely in new oak. It has a gorgeous, sensual bouquet with luscious, pure blackcurrant, fresh strawberry and vanilla aromas that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, plenty of rounded, caressing red fruit and the oak is seamless integrated on the finish. This will be a great La Mondotte.

Truffle, burning wood, smoke, incense and plum create the bouquet. Pure, stony, fresh, long and concentrated, the wine is plush, tannic and rich, demanding at least a decade before it comes together, softens and offers it complexities. From the luxury, 12-acre boutique outpost of the Neipperg family, the 2012 La Mondotte (generally 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) has an inky/purple color, sweet mulberry, black cherry and cassis note, stunning purity and full-bodied texture. The wine’s opulence and voluptuous character compare to its greatest vintages, such as 1998, 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010. This pulls no punches, with loads of mint-kissed plum sauce, blackberry confiture and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors that cascade over one another, pumping though a polished, anise-framed finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. — J.M.

The 2012 La Mondotte has a fresh and more vigorous bouquet than its peers with cough candy-tinged red fruit, marmalade, brown spices and leather. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good structure, quite solid in the mouth with grip on the finish.
