The 2012 Boggina (Sangiovese) is one of the more restrained, finessed wines I have tasted at Petrolo. Weightless and gracious in the glass, the 2012 is built on a core of super-expressive, floral and red-toned fruit. With air, the Boggina fleshes out and takes on slightly darker shades of expression. Hints of tobacco and mint add nuance on the finish in a highly appealing, fruit-driven Sangiovese to drink now and over the next decade-plus.

Beautiful aromas of ripe strawberry and bing cherry are nicely complimented by subtle hints of loamy earth, wild herbs and rose petals. Beautiful aromas of ripe strawberry and bing cherry are nicely complimented by subtle hints of loamy earth, wild herbs and rose petals. Broad and elegant, it is darker and more full-bodied on the palate than the nose would indicate, but there remains a racy core of acidity giving the wine vibrancy and focus through a long finish. An excellent expression of Sangiovese, this is just entering its prime drinking window, and should show well for another 8-10 years.

The vineyard that produces Petrolo ‘Boggina’ was planted in 1952 and it's still the best Sangiovese vineyard of Petrolo. This vineyard was selected by Giulio Gambelli in 1988 for the production of ‘Il Torrione’. Only a small portion of that production merits inclusion in ‘Boggina’. It is a Sangiovese for special occasions.

Winery

Petrolo

Petrolo winery is owned by 4 generations by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. The estate extends over 109 acres, 825 to 1,500 feet above sea level, in an area known for prestigious wines since the Renaissance.

The vineyards are set in Val d'Arno Superiore, among the hills of the "Chianti Colli Aretini," bordering southeastern Chianti Classico. The somewhat loosely packed soil features layers of claystone, shale and limestone.

Petrolo aims to produce wines with character and terroir from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, with 5,500 plants per hectare, production has been reduced to less than 8,000 cases in order to maximize quality. Hand-harvested and fermented in individual lots using native yeasts, the bulk of production is aged in French barriques, though they do employ the use of large oak casks.

Petrolo produces six dry wines and a Vin Santo, but is best known for the 100% Merlot, Galatrona, and the Cabernet-based Il Torrione.
