Wine Enthusiast, March 2016

This is a firm wine although with superb fruit. It is structured and dense, dark with tarry tannins as well as juicy fruitiness. It is a powerful wine that certainly has the freshness of the year while also having dark...

The Wine Independent, September 2023

This was a cool, rainy, and very challenging vintage! The 2013 Montrose is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.49. Medium garnet in color, it leaps from the glass with notes of...

jamessuckling.com, February 2016

Aromas of black currant and dried flowers such as violets. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a delicate. Fruity finish. Seamless tannins. Drink now.

janeanson.com, February 2022

This is enjoyable, and as you find in most instances in 2013, the gap between the main estate wine and its 2nd label is wide. Enjoyably supple texture to the tannins, and there is a charming unrolling of woodsmoke...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

Medium bodied, surprisingly early drinking Montrose which is perhaps more interesting on the nose than on the fresh, spicy, charming palate. For consumers not willing to wait for vintages like 2010 that take 20 years to...

Wine Spectator, March 2016

Rock-solid, with lightly steeped red currant and damson plum fruit that fills outs nicely with air, while singed alder, tobacco, iron and warm pebble notes show in the background. The pure finish has good energy. A great...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, April 2014

68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Lovely aromas, though in a rather constrained fashion. Luscious fruit and beautifully plush tannins. Attractive dark chocolate and tobacco-smoke flavours, good...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2016

The 2013 Montrose has an understated, lilting bouquet with blackberry and briary scents and dried rose petals, gaining more intensity as it opens over 2-3 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple...

Vinous, August 2023

The 2013 Montrose has attractive freshness and vitality on the nose: blackberry, cedar and light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. It's not complex but conveys...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.
