This zeroes in on a rich, hedonistic core of wild berry, blackberry, plum and currant flavors, with a graceful, elegant mouthfeel and supple, caressing tannins. The long and powerful yet refined aftertaste keeps reverberating fruit generosity while maintaining Cabernet's strength of personality. Drink now through 2030. 21,249 cases made. –JL

The full-throttle character is here as expected with lots of ripe fruit and toasted oak. Sage and mint. Silky tannins; the ripe fruit dominates. But it shows form and juiciness. Try it in 2019 as it mellows with age.

The bouquet is stuffed full of black and blue fruit along with sweet oak and secondary aromas of crushed granite and dark tilled earth. The palate confirms the primary fruit with some added red cassis. There is pleasant acidity, silky round tannins and sweet baking spices that linger on the finish. Made to drink now, the Caymus Special Selection is a crowd pleaser and will cellar nicely for the next 10-15 years.

Label

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection is the flagship wine of the Wagner family, produced under the guidance of Chuck Wagner. Made from the very best barrels of the vintage, the wine is not produced in difficult vintages.

Its distinctive aromas and flavors are achieved through “hang time” – leaving the fruit to hang on the vine unusually long to develop suppleness, increase color, and mature the tannins of the grapes.

Winery

Caymus

Caymus Vineyards was founded in Napa Valley by Charlie Wagner, his wife Belle Glos and their son Chuck in 1971. The first Caymus wine, 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, was released in 1972. Over the 45 years that followed, Caymus wine has become an icon of Napa Valley and production has grown to 65,000 cases.

Caymus Vineyards is still 100% family-owned. Much of their wine comes from estate vineyards, 350 acres in all, located throughout Napa Valley. The Caymus wine line-up includes Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Caymus Napa Valley Zinfandel and their flagship wine, Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon.

The signature style of Caymus wine is based on ripe fruit and mouth-filling structure. The fine, Napa Valley weather allows grapes to hang on the vine into early Fall without risk. This extended ripening yields rich, jammy fruit and plush, melt-in-your-mouth tannins.

While Caymus wines are focused just on Napa Valley Cabernet and Zinfandel, the Wagner family has other wine labels too, including Mer Soleil, Emmolo and Conundrum, the latter a trend-setting white wine.
